Desconhecida da maioria das pessoas, a “Raça Asinina de Miranda” é a única raça de burros autóctone portuguesa. A área geográfica de implantação, conhecida como o “solar da raça”, é o nordeste de Portugal, distrito de Bragança, o planalto mirandês, nomeadamente concelhos de Bragança, Miranda do Douro, Vimioso, Mogadouro.
Unknown to most people, the “Raça Asinina de Miranda” is the only native Portuguese donkey breed. The geographical area of implementation, known as the “manor of the race”, is the northeast of Portugal, district of Bragança, the Mirandese plateau, namely the municipalities of Bragança, Miranda do Douro, Vimioso, Mogadouro.
Pensa-se que o aparecimento desta raça se deu nesta zona porque reúne as condições ambientais e de isolamento propícias e se manteve ali devido às características geográficas e agrícolas do terreno, aliado aos factores sócio-económicos da região. São animais inteligentes, astutos, pacientes, sóbrios, serviçais com grande resistência ao trabalho, muito curiosos e sobretudo, muito leais a quem os trata bem.
It is thought that the appearance of this breed occurred in this area because it has the right environmental and isolation conditions and has remained there due to the geographical and agricultural characteristics of the land, combined with the socio-economic factors of the region. They are intelligent, cunning, patient, sober animals, servants with great resistance to work, very curious and above all, very loyal to those who treat them well.
Reconhecem com facilidade o seu dono, especialmente na hora das refeições em que transmitem sonoramente, com grandes zurros, a sua intransigência aos atrasos. Relacionam-se particularmente bem com as crianças. Actualmente em Portugal existem apenas cerca de 800 fêmeas reprodutoras, com idade média de 20 anos e em que a idade média dos donos é de 72 anos! Esta é uma das razões porque é considerada uma raça em perigo extremo de extinção!
They easily recognize their owner, especially at mealtimes when they loudly convey, with loud braying, their intransigence to delays. They relate particularly well to children. Currently in Portugal there are only around 800 breeding females, with an average age of 20 years and the average age of the owners is 72 years! This is one of the reasons why it is considered a breed in extreme danger of extinction!

Pelagem comprida, castanha escura, com gradações mais claras nos costados e face inferior do tronco; branca no focinho e contorno dos olhos.

Hirsutismo acentuado com pêlo abundante, comprido e grosso, aumentando em extensão e abundância nos costados, face, entre-ganachas, bordos das orelhas e extremidades dos membros.

Crinas abundantes; ausência de sinais; Temperamento dócil; Olhos pequenos, dando ao animal uma fisionomia sombria. Pescoço curto e grosso.

Cabeça volumosa e ganachuda de perfil recto; fronte larga e levemente côncava na linha mediana, coberta de abundante pêlo (chegando a formar-se sobre a fronte uma espécie de “franja”);
Voluminous and thick head with a straight profile; forehead wide and slightly concave in the midline, covered with abundant hair (some kind of “fringe” forming on the forehead);
Arcadas orbitárias muito salientes; face curta de chanfro largo; canal entre-ganachas largo; lábios grossos e fortes. Orelhas grandes e largas na base, revestidas no seu bordo interior de abundante pilosidade, arredondadas na ponta (formando uma espécie de borla) e dirigidas para a frente.
Very prominent orbital arches; short face with wide chamfer; wide channel between ganaches; thick and strong lips. Ears large and wide at the base, covered on their inner edge with abundant hair, rounded at the tip (forming a kind of tassel) and directed forward.
Garrote baixo e pouco destacado. Dorso tendendo para a horizontalidade, curto e bem musculado. Peitoral amplo com quilha saliente. Tórax profundo. Costado encurvado. Garupa em ogiva mais elevada que o garrote, pouco destacada. Espáduas curtas e bem desenvolvidas, com ligeira inclinação.
Withers low and not very prominent. Back tending towards horizontality, short and well muscled. Wide chest with protruding keel. Deep chest. Curved side. Croup in ogee higher than the withers, not very prominent. Shoulders short and well developed, with a slight inclination.
Ventre volumoso. Membros grossos de articulações volumosas, providos de pêlo abundante cobrindo os cascos, machinhos bem desenvolvidos; membros posteriores com tendência a serem estendidos e um pouco canejos; cascos amplos. Andamentos de grande amplitude mas lentos, pouco ágeis.
Bulky belly. Thick limbs with voluminous joints, provided with abundant fur covering the hooves, well-developed males; hind limbs tending to be extended and a little lame; wide hooves. Movements of great amplitude but slow, not very agile.
